What is Sure Cuts A Lot 2?
Sure Cuts A Lot 2 (SCAL) is a software that can be used specifically with the Cricut Expression, Cricut Personal, Cricut Create, and Cricut Cake Machines. This software will allow you to create images and fonts without having to buy all those expensive cartridges. In order to use this software you may have to update your firmware on your machine. If that is necessary this software will walk you through the steps of how to do that for free. I purchased my copy from ETSY.com and paid $24.99. It can also be purchased off of ebay and craftedge.com. Seeing as how most of the Cricut cartridges are at least $25 each and you are limited by what material is on the cartridge to what types of projects you can make this is a cheap and easy option. This is not a Cricut brand software so there is the possibility of this voiding your 1 year warranty. However, if you're like me and purchased your machine used then that won't be an issue. In this article I will go with you step by step on how to install and use this software.
Step 1- Installation
Once you insert the disk into your computer a pop-up box will open telling you to run the set-up file and follow the prompts.
After the prompts have been installed you can begin to use the software.
If your firmware on your Cricut machine needs to be updated SCAL will walk you through the process of how to update that for free! When you turn your Cricut on it will say on the screen if it's 1.0 or 1.2 for example; this is how you will now if it needs to be updated. The entire process from update to install was 15 minutes.
Step 2: Create
This software has many different options of how you can create. You can change your font and even insert saved images. Simply use the pad on the screen that resembles your cricut keypad or your keyboard and start designing. You can also cut in layers if you need to do several colors. You can use downloaded fonts and other SVG images. There are also some generic images in the software for basic projects. It has some scrollwork, shapes, floral, and animals just to list a few.

Step 3: Cutting
When you're done with your design you will need to prep your machine. Turn your machine on, apply your paper to your mat making sure it's lined up properly, and insert the mat into the machine and push the load paper button on your Cricut machine. Make sure your pressure and depth are set properly depending on the type of material you're using (if you're using vinyl the depth and pressure will need to be set as deep as it can go). When you have everything set you just push the 'cut' button in your software. Your machine should start cutting. To unload the mat just push the unload paper button on your Cricut machine.
Step 4: Start Crafting
Now that you have endless possibilities at your fingertips you can craft away. I recommend using the Cricut spatula to remove your items from the mat.

This machine is only compatible with the older machines and unfortunately can not be used with the explorer. This software was discontinued before the explorer was released so it is not compatible.
Hi, Hope you can answer my question. I purchased my SCAL for my old expression machine this summer and have had no trouble getting both the software and the cutting to work. Last weekend, I updated to Windows 10 and now the software works, but the cutting hangs up. It starts and then just hangs and never cuts. I tried reinstalling the driver and also the software, but it still is not working. Any suggestions? Thanks for any information you can give me.

I was wanting to purchase this software on Etsy I am assuming its from the same seller you bought it from, My cricut expressions firm ware is 2.0 but it needs to be 2.1 or higher.. correct? I have had SCAL for a very long time and went through all of the firmware updates when I installed it for use on my cricut expression long ago when I got it - Recently my cricut is saying it needs a new firmware update and I have not done it because I am scared I won't be able to use my SCAL anymore. I can't cut anything in my cricut craft room because it won't let me until I update. Any experience or advise on this would be so appreciated! Thank you so much!!

Hi, I have another question. I found a blog that talks about Sure Cuts A Lot and Cricut. The blogger states that I'll have to download Inkscape if I want to convert a JPEG image to an svg file. First of all, umm, I don't have a clue what this means. Secondly, is this true? Cindy

Hi, I'm hoping you can answer my question about Cricut and SCAL. I purchased a used Cricut Expression( the first version) 3 weeks ago. My understanding is that I can't use the SCAL software with my Cricut due to ProvoCraft disabling it's use with their product. As I was reading your information about how to install SCAL, I noticed the date shows 2014. Did you recently start using the software? I would LOVE to not purchase cartridges because of their cost. I have purchased 4 but would have to spend a freaking fortune to get all of the images I like. I have asked other Cricut users online but the answer I've gotten is ' no, it can't be done'.
