I solved the cooling issue by removing the back plate/drive carriers, and installing a 120mm, USB powered, low noise fan to the back of the case. The case in back is just shy of a 120mm fan width by 2mm, so it's nearly a perfect fit. The drives stay cool, noise is much lower.
